Six Benefits Of Exercise During Pregnancy And Our Top Picks For Pregnancy-Friendly Exercises

So, you’re pregnant- Woo Hoo!!  Time to put your feet up and let those running shoes start collecting dust – at least for the next 9 months when the only workout you need to do is carry around your growing baby bump, right?! I hate to burst your bubble – but pregnancy is definitely not the time to give up on your exercise regime.  Numerous studies have shown that not only is your body able to workout during pregnancy, but that it actually benefits from it, and possibly even your growing baby too!  Below are six benefits to maintaining your workout during pregnancy and our favorite picks to break a sweat.  If you are new to working out or have any concerns, please consult with your doctor before beginning your exercise routine.

  1. Better Sleep- Getting a little cardio in can help you get a better, more restful sleep at night. Enough said, right?!
  2. Increase in Energy- While it seems contradictory, exercising will actually help to give you more energy by improving your cardiovascular system, so you don’t tire as easily, thus giving you more stamina to get through the day!
  3. Stress Relief/Improves Mood- Exercise can be a fantastic outlet to relief stress! Also, exercise has been found to also increase levels of serotonin, which is a brain chemical that helps to regulate anxiety and increase levels of happiness!
  4. Reducing Pregnancy Discomfort- Studies have shown that exercise can help with many of the discomforts of pregnancy, including swelling, constipation, backaches and bloating. Regular exercise will help to strengthen your muscles, and in return help your body to cope better with all the changes that are happening to your body.
  5. Help to get you in “Labor-Shape”- Regular exercise will not only help to build muscle and strength but will also help build your endurance for the possible rigors of labor. Your body will ultimately thank you for being in stronger, better shape!
  6. Baby Benefits Too- The benefits of working out can reach the growing baby as well! Studies have shown that mothers who exercise during pregnancy are more likely to deliver babies at a healthier birth weight and lower resting heart rate. Exercise can also lead to increased brain activity for baby as well!
