Love vs Discipline: Toddler Parenting

The Stork Bag - Love vs Discipline Toddler Parenting

*This guest blog was contributed by Dee Styles*

I noticed my daughter was becoming more difficult to deal with. It seemed like she was intentionally being naughty, and when I’d had enough of it, I told her to stay in the naughty corner.

The funny thing is, every time this happened she would apologize immediately with tears in her eyes. She would be quick with the hugs and to tell me that she loves me. But sure enough, it doesn’t take long before she gets right back to being naughty again. My hubby also noticed the trend so we talked about it and decided to do something different. Disciplining her was obviously not working, shouting (me basically screaming my head off all the time) was just wrong because she screamed right back and this wasn’t the example that I wanted to set with my child, or the relationship that I wanted to have with her.

When my hubby and I decided to do what we agreed on, there was a turn around almost immediately! Positive parenting for the win! So, how did we go about this?

Obviously a lot had changed; with her brother now in the picture she has to share her mom and dad. Not only that, but a new school term began with a new class, a new teacher, and new kids. My Princess had a lot to deal with and she definitely needed my help – more attention, extra patience, more love and positive words.

So this is where I revea the big secret. It’s all about using praise to get your kid to do the right thing.

Every child loves to be praised, and no child loves to be scolded. Praising your child more will make your child try harder at pleasing you.

While this method actually requires you to have some extra patience, trust me when I say that the reward at the end is worth it.

So if you see your older kid throwing more tantrums than usual, instead of giving more privileges or gifts and unnecessary attention (or worse intensified discipline or shouting like I initially did) try this instead: show more love by using praise. And when they do the right things, shower them with even more praise.

This isn’t as easy as it sounds, so you’ll want to exercise patience with them. Remember, this is your child, and you need to invest the time in helping them to grow up to be great adults. with patience and the right approach, you can begin to help them to make the right decisions for themselves.

6 Helpful Tips for Expecting Toddler Moms

*This article from our archives was written by The Stork Bag Founder, Ericka Perry.*

And then there were two…

Oh my, I have decided there are different stages of motherhood and each has its own challenges and solutions.

As a mother of a toddler and infant, I am constantly looking for ways to cheat time. I always want to squeeze out another hour from the 24hours in a day. It’s impossible!

I have learned that nothing is easy, you only get better at it with time. Don’t get me wrong, I love my kids plus the laughter in my home has doubled, the joy has increased and with two kids there is never a dull moment. But it isn’t easy, so we’ve put together a few tips for you.

Are you a mom of a toddler and expecting another baby? Well, here are 6 tips to help you:

Don’t forget that you already have a child. Anytime your toddler calls for your attention, make sure you give him/her your attention.

Kids act out sometimes. Refrain from blaming the toddler for anything that happens to the baby.

Have special activities for your toddler. Know what your toddler loves that can keep him/her busy for 20-30 minutes and use it whenever baby needs your undivided attention.

Routine and stability are important to toddlers. Ensure your baby’s arrival does not upset your toddler’s routine.

Give each child one on one time when possible. You and your spouse should exchange one on one bonding time with each kid. Daddy and toddler time, mommy and baby time; daddy and baby, mommy and toddler.

Help your toddler to feel important. When family and friends come to visit, let your toddler introduce the baby, and let them know that they have been a good big brother or sister.

This whole situation must sound difficult and stressful, but don’t worry – parenting two young children at the same time can be done. And if you’re ever feeling overwhelmed, don’t be hard on yourself – being a mom isn’t always easy! Be sure to reach out to family and friends for help, and to access parenting and community resources.

Preparing For Delivery: 6 Things You Must Have & Must Know

The Stork Bag - Preparing For Delivery: 6 Things You Must Have & Must Know

Time For Baby!  It seemed like this day would never come. Almost 1 year of waiting and the time has finally arrived– time for baby to make their debut! But wait, what are the things you need to know that no one really talks about? And what do you absolutely NEED in your hospital bag? We’ve talked to several mommies and complied a list of 6 Things You Must Have & Must Know to prepare for delivery. Here they are:

Why don’t people talk about the pain that comes along with your uterus contracting back to its normal size?  Ok, so not to scare any of you lovely first-time mommies right off the bat, but yes, there is pain that comes even after you’ve delivered your bundle of joy. While this pain seems to vary amongst mothers, it is very real and you should know that it is also completely normal. Most moms opt for some over the counter pain meds to relieve this pain while some moms just “deal with it”. Either way, you should know that postpartum contracting does happen.

BYOP: Bring Your Own Pads!  Unless you want to use the hospital provided feminine pads that are oddly shaped and ill contoured, it feels much better to wear your own pads that are specifically contoured to fit your panties and allows you to feel more comfortable. Our advice: pack your own pads and make sure they are the extra absorbency, overnight pads.

Get Those Bowels Moving!  Childbirth can be a beautiful thing but there is also a less appealing, behind-the-scenes side to it too, and this is one of them. Most doctors require you to have a bowel movement in the hospital before going home. S ome women resort to stool softeners to help the process. Although your delivery environment and doctor or midwife may have different practices, postpartum constipation is a real thing and often occurs as a result of stretched stomach muscles, lack of food intake and can even be as result of fear. Either way, fiber is your friend and this is totally normal.

Don’t Forget The Wipes: Hemorrhoid wipes that is. They come in handy and believe us, while some hospitals provide them to new moms, some do not. So packing your own would be very beneficial post-delivery, and is highly recommended.

A Little Tube of Heaven: While this necessity may seem like more of a want than a need, I think all moms can agree that chap stick is definitely needed! Think about that fact that during labor you can’t eat, some doctors don’t allow you to even drink water… so, your mouth will get dry and lips will become chapped and this could all be very uncomfortable. Having some chap stick nearby might prove to be very helpful.

Take Advantage of Help: You’ve waited so long to meet your new love and those little fingers and toes aren’t going to kiss themselves right? Right, but get some rest! It’s really important that you get as much rest as you can, your body has just been through the workout of a lifetime and you probably haven’t had a good sleep in a long time so we say, take advantage of the help offered to you. It’s sometimes hard to let baby out of your sight, but the importance of mommy getting some much needed rest is paramount. You probably won’t be sleeping peacefully for some time, so don’t pass up any opportunities for rest.

We hope that this blog post has helped you before and after delivery. As with everything relating to your pregnancy and childbirth, we always advise you to speak with your healthcare professional about any concerns or questions you may have regarding your pregnancy and delivery.

What Every First Time Pregnant Mom Should Know

What Every First Time Pregnant Mom Should Know

*This article from our archives was written by The Stork Bag Founder, Ericka Perry*

I am so excited to be doing another post for The Stork Bag and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my experience and make some mommas out there happy. Hope you guys are doing good out there, this one is for all the first time mamas. Being pregnant is a beautiful thing, so enjoy it while it lasts! However, here is what I feel you should know from the time you see that double line on the test kit and you call out to your hubby “Honey! We’re having a baby!” Oops! Don’t get it wrong girl: you and your partner are having a baby alright, but it’s you who’s going to carry the baby to term.

1. I can’t stress this enough: you are pregnant and not your partner – just you hun (you will understand once the nausea starts to kick in and most especially when labor cramps sets in.)

2. This is sad, but you can kiss your wine and cigarettes good bye for at least 9 months.

3. Get ready to know the types of pillows and their uses. Trust me when I say that one size does not fit all. You will need different types of pillows for every stage of your pregnancy, including special ones that you will need after delivery.

4. You get to develop a superhuman sense of smell. Suddenly, it will seem like every smell is twice as strong – especially the sharp or repulsive ones!

5. Do yourself a favour get a new bra now (preferably a sports bra; thank me later). You might have to go up to two sizes bigger during your pregnancy, and no I am not joking.

6.Get a good massage oil (personally I love argon) and have your partner help you out, or if you can budget for it, I highly recommend a visit to a good masseuse or the spa.

7. Squeeze half a lemon into cool water and be sure to take it everywhere with you. This refreshing drink will come in handy throughout your pregnancy.

8. During my pregnancy, I couldn’t get enough natural lemon scent – I loved having them around the house. Find a scent that works for your and indulge in it.

9. Don’t ask any moms too many questions or specifics about their birthing experience – trust me when I say that you don’t want to know all of the details.

10. There are lots of helpful apps to help you manager your pregnancy, so be sure to try a few and find one that works for you

The good news is that for 9 months you don’t have to worry about period cramps – but you will have more serious stuff to worry about. Sorry!

It’s an experience that can be explained but is best experienced. It’s a life changing journey, and one that comes with inexplicable joy at the end.

Congratulations to all first time moms out there – your joy is right around the corner!
